Silence in class

Article Abstract:

Grove Road Primary School in West London, UK has won the 1993 Green Building of the Year Award sponsored by The Independent on Sunday. The school is under Heathrow Airport's flight path. The design brief specified a 35 decibel sound reduction within the constraints of a low council contract sum of 1.3 million pounds sterling. Sound reduction has been achieved by concrete interlocking roof tiles, 2 layers of heavy felt, loft insulation and 2 layers of plasterboard. Heating costs have been decreased by trapping air heated by the conservatory and circulating it around the building.
