Silent running

Article Abstract:

The UK's Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions will receive from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) the draft Economic Strategy for the South-East region by end-October 1999. The plan emphasizes the need for a new economic axis in the region but fails to identify labour shortage problems in areas such as Milton Keynes, Surrey and Oxfordshire. Despite this, and its refusal to become involved in the housing debate, the initiative has been welcomed by local authority commentators. SEEDA's goals are to establish the south east as one of the world's leading regional economies and to secure environmentally-sensitive sustainable development.

In the stare of ravens

Article Abstract:

University lecturers can face considerable challenges when addressing large groups of students. The lecturer does not receive the visual and non-visual prompts present in normal conversation, and can therefore find it hard to judge whether the students are really understanding what is being said. Research indicates that a student audience can have an influence over the quality of lecture delivered. If the students behave in an appreciative and supportive way, then the lecturer tends to be more likely to clarify points.

The power of one

Article Abstract:

More and more single women have become assertive of their place in a society which, despite high divorce rates, still reveres marriage. The single women of the 1990s have transcended the spinster stereotype, and have proven that they can be as happy, if not happier, than their married counterparts.
