Simon Murray

Article Abstract:

UK companies do not take experience from one project into the next project, according to Railtrack's Simon Murray, who is responsible for major projects. He expresses regret for the fact that talented people tend to be removed from frontline project management while still relatively young. He is seeking a four-fold improvement in track renewal time, with station refurbishment being undertaken in half the time for two-thirds of the cost. He strongly supports lean construction and the adoption of car manufacturing techniques.

Less is more

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry invests a smaller percentage of its turnover in research than its counterparts in continental Europe. In 1994, investment in construction research was only 236 million pounds sterling, down by 2% in real terms from 1990, with contractors investing only 9 million pounds sterling in research. However, vital research is being undertaken by universities and sector-specific research organisations, and there are signs that research is becoming more focused.

Advanced-level architecture

Article Abstract:

The refurbishment of Hertfordshire and Essex High School in Bishop's Stortford, England, has been completed on time and within budget. This scheme is designed to encourage sixth-formers to remain at the school, rather than moving to other educational establishments with better facilities. An Edwardian schoolhouse has been refurbished, and the project has also included adding dining facilities, an eight-classroom block and a new changing room and dance studio in the sports block.
