Site managers share 270,000 pounds sterling bonus

Article Abstract:

UK building contractor Overbury operates a bonus payment scheme for its site managers. Under the scheme the managers can earn up to 3% of the value of the contract, with 1% for completion by the deadline, 1% for absence of problems on completion and 1% for achieving an average 90% score in a client satisfaction questionnaire. Overbury, which expects to pay out 270,000 pounds sterling under the scheme in 1996, says its intention is to win more work from the same clients but it also attracts staff from other contractors.

Labour fails to convince construction

Article Abstract:

A number of elements of the construction policy of the UK Labour party have failed to gain the support of industry leaders. These include the party's commitment to the use of legal measures against late payers. The Federation of Small Businesses has instead called for a voluntary code of practice to ensure a reduction in legal action and arbitration in the construction industry. However, the industry has welcomed Labour's promise to use local authorities' capital receipts to pay for more social housing.

City pans Raine takeover

Article Abstract:

City of London analysts have expressed negative views about the purchase of housebuilder and contractor Raine by Alfred McAlpine. They believe that MacAlpine will be forced to purchase land at a time when prices are rising because Hassall Homes, the housebuilding operation of Raine, has only a very small stock of land. With the purchase of Hassall Homes, McAlpine will become the seventh-largest housebuilder in the UK, completing more than 3,500 houses a year.
