British construction contractors must protect themselves against the next recession and increase their number of skills, according to a study called 'The Construction Company In and Out of Recession'. In 1994, the recession continued for Britain's 10 leading contractors. They reduced their workforces by over 11,000 employees, and had less work to do.

Chirac victory tempts Tarmac again

Article Abstract:

Tarmac Construction is about to buy a contractor in France. Tarmac has been attracted to the French market by President Jacques Chirac's promise to spend 2 billion French francs on housebuilding for the homeless. Tarmac aims to rise French turnover to 200-250 million pounds sterling from 70-80 million pounds sterling in the next three to five years.

Taking the initiative

Article Abstract:

Future growth in the UK contracting industry will be based on 'differentiation', according to Neville Simms, chief executive of Tarmac, construction group. Financially strong contractors will undertake new kinds of major projects and private financing. Other contractors will have to become subcontractors or merge with each other.
