The rising tide ... raises all boats

Article Abstract:

Electronic commerce will lead to significant increase in remote shopping, new service levels, improved targeting, new marketing tactics, consolidation and heightened awareness or oversight by governments. Since 1998, online shopping has also been responsible for 40% of sales made by mail-order houses. Another impact of electronic commerce is that it raises the level of customer service. Customers can monitor their orders, its expected shipping date and written confirmation of any gift messages.

Study finds growth in the hybrid catalog market

Article Abstract:

More catalog companies are publishing hybrid catalogs, or catalogs that target both consumers and businesses, according to a 1998 survey conducted by W.A. Dean & Associates of San Francisco, CA. In the survey, 49% of respondents are hybrid catalogs, 33% consumer-oriented and 18% business-to-business, compared with 68%, 11% and 21%, respectively, in the previous year's survey. Another notable difference was a decline in median sales to $15.7 million from $7.5 million. The trend towards establishing a presence on the Web continues and is fast reaching 100%.
