Take advantage of the greening of Europe

Article Abstract:

New innovations are needed in the UK construction industry to take over the burden of waste disposal. The 1991 Environmental Protection Act has introduced strict legal requirements concerning waste disposal which is costly for the construction industry. Companies have a 'duty of care' to deal with waste disposal and a 'duty of aftercare.' Marley Building Materials and British Polythene have jointly launched a free dumping service for construction firms. The scheme provides free recycled polythene bags and collection. In 1991 the scheme recycled 4000 tonnes of waste plastic.

Getting the Act together

Article Abstract:

The UK government has finally decided that it is necessary to legislate on construction contracts, even though some elements within the government remain opposed to this. It was decided some time ago to pass the recommendations in the 'Constructing the Team' report on construction contracts, but difficulties arose because other professions were also seeking changes in liability law. It is to be hoped that the legislation will be introduced as soon as possible.

Marked quality

Article Abstract:

Cowboy builders are a major concern to the UK government and a steering group on the subject, led by John Prescott, will give preliminary findings by end-Feb, 1999. Subgroups of the steering group are focusing on accreditation and certification. The group studying trade associations plans to develop a system enabling firms to apply for a quality mark that will indicate their competence to offer qualifications they claim to possess.
