Taking off

Article Abstract:

A new local authority and private finance initiative (PFI) deal has been used to fund the construction of an airport building at London Luton Airport, London England. The new terminal building will cost 150 million pounds sterling. Some expert observers suggest the end of the gross domestic product deflator for local authority deals is likely to increase PFI and local authority contracts. Private finance initiative deals may also be used to build new university buildings and for social housing construction. There is some concern the bidding process will increase costs for contractors.

What difference does a year make?

Article Abstract:

Some of the large British contracting firms deny the 1998 Egan report 'Rethinking Construction' has had any affect on their businesses. Whilst small contracting companies suggest they are more concerned about finding a skilled labour force than thinking about the report. Some small architect practices are using benchmarking to help rationalize their operation whilst larger firms suggest they do not have time to introduce any of the ideas in the Egan report. The report has had an effect on the way the government views contractors and how it is insisting contractors use benchmarking.
