The terrace that costs 5% less

Article Abstract:

Pierre d'Avoine Architects designed the Slim Home displayed at the 1999 Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition. This concept house is around 5% cheaper to build than a traditional terraced house, at 42,721 pounds sterling per three-bed unit. Its main elements are a 5 mt wide by 25 mt long living area and a separate 6 mt long first floor pavilion located over the living area. This gives a double height, galleried space, and there is potential for full flooring in, thus forming additional living or working space. The house has good energy efficiency, mainly through low-tech features.

Kitchen slink

Article Abstract:

Research by UK housebuilders has revealed a trend towards open-plan kitchen areas which merge into living space. Warm colours and the inviting nature of kitchens can be used to create a total living space which can be stylish yet functional. Large open-plan kitchens are ideal for families with young children or for when entertaining. Housebuilders have discovered open-plan kitchens are a selling tool when it comes to housing developments aimed at families and young couples.

What a difference a day makes

Article Abstract:

Housebuilders in the Netherlands are becoming increasingly interested in using brick-faced concrete panels. Combining these panels with precast concrete floors and a timber panelized roof makes it possible for the work on site to be carried out very quickly. The panels are manufactured by Sterk, which uses a similar process to that used for brick slip-faced concrete panels. The concrete is made with Lytag lightweight aggregate, which is 20% lighter than normal concrete.
