The benchmark

Article Abstract:

The construction of nine storey office building Garrard House, City of London, England, was undertaken with close scrutiny of the performance of the contractors. Construction firm Bovis and developers Stanthorpe were determined to cut costs. More money was spent on equipment, such as access equipment to save money in the long term. Contractors were given cartoons and axonometrics to help them with their work. The building cost 96 pounds sterling per sq ft in 1998, compared to a similar building built in 1988 which was 95 pounds sterling per sq ft.

New faces

Article Abstract:

Building Envelopes is a curtain-walling and cladding consultancy that has been newly established by Tony Tidy and Stephen Tanno. The new joint venture company aims to provide clients with comprehensive, tailored advice on cladding projects. The co-founders believe that if contractors give early consideration to cladding design they will save money on the contract. However, while clients express a wish to support the firm, many are concerned that it has no track record.
