The burning question

Article Abstract:

It is estimated that about 1 hisitorical building is damaged by fire in the UK every year. The UK Heritage Sec Peter Brooke has set up an inquiry into fire prevention for royal homes following the fire at Windsor Castle at the end of 1992. It is following in the footsteps of an earlier inquiry chaired by Sir John Garlick which focused on fire management solutions follwing the fire at Hampton Court in 1986. The inquiry aims to combine a management policy with physical fire protection methods, such as sprinklers and air sampling systems.

Housing paper flawed, warns HBF

Article Abstract:

The UK government's new housing white paper, entitled 'Our Future Homes,' lacks real substance, according to the House Builders Federation (HBF). The housing market must be stimulated effectively if home ownership levels are to rise, and this will not take place while the Treasury remains so apparently unwilling to inject money into this part of the economy. Housebuilders are also concerned about government plans to abolish support for unemployed homeowners.

Persimmon set to buy Ideal

Article Abstract:

Trafalgar House subsidiary Ideal Homes looks set to be purchased for 170 million pounds sterling by fellow housebuilder Persimmon, although there is still the possibility of a rival bid from Beazer Homes. The purchase would make Persimmon the fourth-largest housebuilder in the UK. It already builds 3,170 homes a year, and predicts pre-tax profit of 22.5 million pounds sterling for the year to Dec 31, 1995.
