The front man

Article Abstract:

Marco Goldschmied has three main aims for his term as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, which will begin in Jul 1999. He wants to raise public perceptions concerning the ability of architects to define national heritage. He also wants to improve some of the structures, including the planning system, which surround the architectural profession, and to reinstate architects as a significant force within the building and design industry. Goldschmied began his architectural career in 1971 and has been Managing Director of the Richard Rogers Partnership since 1984.

Beat the competition

Article Abstract:

A 15-point checklist has been produced by the UK Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to help architects chose which competitions to enter. The checklist includes ensuring the contest follows government standards, named judges are used, criteria are clear for winner selection and shortlist winners should be publicly displayed. The RIBA tried to clarify competition guidelines in 1996 but felt it was important to reiterate procedures in 1998.
