The pact

Article Abstract:

The Construction Clients Forum has drawn up a list of demands to improve the quality of work produced by the UK construction industry. Clients who provide the construction industry with some 40 billion pounds sterling of business are demanding that contractors must provide an improved planning and research service, better trained staff and fulfill their contractural obligations particularly in budgetary matters. The clients have also drawn up a list of duties that they are willing to perform, such as better communications and being more reasonable concerning costing.

Can't pay - won't pay

Article Abstract:

Building subcontractors in the UK should be aware that a notice of arbitration may be used to sort out disputes concerning outstanding bills. A contractor called upon a clause in a contract made with a subcontractor which specified that arbitration should be used in any type of dispute. The subcontractor was owed several thousands of pounds sterling by the contractor who did not deny the subcontractor's claim for payment. The contractor was misusing the arbitration clause and payment should therefore be demanded immediately by the subcontractor.

Cost model

Article Abstract:

Opportunities for contractors and consultants in the private sector of the housing market have been limited because of the dominance of volume builders. The UK government has now placed restrictions on the use of greenfield sites which were the main areas used for standardised volume buildings. The UK government wants the use of brownfield sites to be developed and it is felt that this may give the contractors and consultants, formerly restricted by volume building, an opportunity in this market.
