The weighting game: BREEAM is unfair, say some. But no one has yet come up with anything better. Critics say the assessment should put more emphasis on energy-saving measures, rather than the money spent by the developer on ecological assessment or materials recycling

Article Abstract:

The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is a comprehensive measure of a building's environmental credentials. However developers and consultants want the system to be updated so that it does not discriminate against developers without funding or opportunity to comply with its requirements. The voluntary system aims to give credits for each objective achieved with a final score translated into fair, good, very good or excellent ratings. There is criticism about the way the final rating is arrived at.

Monumental headache

Article Abstract:

Guildhall Yard is in the heart of London and contains the remains of a Roman amphitheatre. A 50 million pounds sterling art gallery for the Corporation of London is being built on the site, which is an ancient monument and under the protection of English Heritage. In order to construct a number of basement levels, the Roman masonry has had to be protected and underpinned without any disturbance. The underpinning has been a complicated project, subject to many problems and delays. Details of the project are presented.

The brain gain

Article Abstract:

UK independent M&E contractor Drake & Scull is attempting to rejuvenate its management team by teaching managers more thinking skills, and to make them proactive rather than reactive. The company has advertised for graduate trainees from leading corporations. The scheme has not proven entirely successful, as the management development plan was not fully implemented and the recruits have not been given a range of challenges.
