To cap it all

Article Abstract:

Aluminium contractor Baco Contracts has had to face many challenges in constructing and installing the 30 mt-diameter, 55-tonne cap for the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, England. The cap has 12 sections of 15 mt in length, each of which is made up of five panels. The panels overlap in 60 mm steps up to the peak of the dome. The outermost three panels of the cap are covered in a PTFE-coated glass-fibre fabric, while the two smallest, innermost panels in each section are coated in solid aluminium. It has been necessary to design the cap to extremely high specifications and to work to a very tight timescale.

Up a bit

Article Abstract:

Salaries in the UK construction industry are currently rising by an average of only 3.5%, according to the 1998 Hays Montrose/Building contractors' salary guide. The only clear exception to this trend is among planners, who have seen an average pay increase of 7.3% as demand for their services has risen. There is also strong demand for buyers, estimators and quantity surveyors with intermediate experience. There are clear regional trends in salary movements, with particular potential for strong salary rises in Northern Ireland.

Combined effort

Article Abstract:

Taylor Woodrow has been working since Apr 1998 on a virtual reality model of the interior of the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, England. The final version of the model is scheduled for completion in Oct 1999. The model, commissioned by NMEC, must be constantly updated. It has already proved valuable for allowing potential sponsors to gain an insight into what the interior of the Dome will look like. Ronan Bocarro, who has responsibility for developing the model, has been using a Silicon Graphics O2 machine.
