Article Abstract:

A benchmarking assessment tool has been developed by UK Building Research Establishment which is set to improve productivity within the construction industry by providing measured statistics to map time and labour needed for specific projects. The Calibre benchmarking tool measures how long it takes to perform individual construction jobs, then calculates average times for every conceivable task. Project managers can use the Calibre benchmarking average to help keep projects on time and within budget.

Family planning

Article Abstract:

The designers of the Integer Millennium house project have incorporated open-plan living with the ability to zone areas off for temporary use. The kitchen and utility room are fitted with waste separating facilities for household rubbish, while all the household appliances are energy efficient and reduce environmental pollution. The bedrooms are located on the ground floor to allow full use of the open-plan top floor areas.

Silence is golden

Article Abstract:

Sound insulation regulations approved by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) are failing to provide adequate protection against noise. Beam-and-block floor designs in flats are often at fault. Insulation systems must be correctly installed to provide the quoted insulation. Over 25% of concrete floors have inadequate sound-proofing, according to BRE.
