More in store

Article Abstract:

Architectural firm Chetwood Associates has won the design competition for Sainsbury's Millennium Store on the site of the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, England. The firm has established its reputation through successful work in the less fashionable end of the commercial sector, and has mainly been involved in designing supermarkets and distribution centres. However, it is now looking to gain more high-profile work. The Millennium Store will feature a number of innovations in supermarket design and construction, including natural lighting and a passive ventilation system.

Chapter and verse

Article Abstract:

Most UK construction companies are not very concerned about the fact that the government is to sign up to the Social Chapter. They will be willing to comply with the provisions of the Social Chapter, which include paternity leave and expensive worker consultation procedures, but are not yet making any steps in this direction. However, some construction industry representatives are concerned about the possible impact of the Social Chapter. In particular, they fear that the Social Chapter could form a basis for further legislative restrictions in the future.

Flat answers

Article Abstract:

Marley Waterproofing hopes that its new Ultima roofing membrane will overcome problems with flat roofs leaking. This is a single-ply bituminous membrane containing 16% styrene butadiene styrene, a synthetic rubber that is combined with bitumen to produce a modified elastomeric polymer. Differential movement will be unlikely to produce cracking because of the high elasticity of the bitumen. The membrane also has very good low-temperature flexibility.
