Transit vanguard

Article Abstract:

Manchester's new tram system, Metrolink has been operating since Apr 1992. It transports commuters from 2 suburban lines and provides communication to the 2 mainline stations, Victoria and Piccadilly. It cost 140 million pounds sterling to develop. The Department of Transport provided a 53 million pounds sterling grant based on a Design Build Operate and Maintain contract. This type of contract provided the impetus for its rapid construction and the modification of existing infrastructure. Some architects condemn its poor design strategy.

Self-sustaining showcase

Article Abstract:

An ecologically friendly visitor centre has been constructed at the Eastbrookend Country Park, Dagenham, UK, after its developers won a 700,000 pounds sterling grant from the Milliennium Commission to fund half the costs. The visitor centre makes use of natural resources, such as timber and and sun light, while designed to be vandal proof through the use of protective paints and a moat to prevent access by cars. The centre caters for educational visits and is thermally heated to reduce costs.
