Article Abstract:

Site restrictions determined the design and construction of a residence in Napa Valley, CA. The project entailed several months of excavation because the site had been covered by a landslide. The design features a rural ranch with covered porches. A skylit rectangular passage served to unite the house's different areas and features a roof with rows of transluscent skylight panels installed between rigid insulation and corrugated fiberglass. Dominant materials include redwood siding, painted wood windows and maple plank flooring while amenities include a guest house and a pool.

Bassenian Lagoni Architects recognized the extent of automobiles' influence on residential design and has developed plans which will lessen their visual impact. Their design makes use of a side alley within the lot which leads from the main road to the garage all the way towards the rear where cars can exit through a 20-ft alley. The community features short grid street layouts that offer neighborly interaction while side walks encourage pedestrian explorations. Houses contain wide porches which allow families to while away their time there.
