UK architects find a niche ... but for others it's tough going; the hook of Holland

Article Abstract:

The Dutch government is openly encouraging foreign architects to increase Dutch knowledge. UK architects are favoured. Sir Norman Forster and Partners have won the contract to redesign Wilhelminapier pier and its buildings which includes an international convention centre for the sum of 550 million pounds sterling. Alan J Smith Partnership have set up in Amsterdam and deals with commercial construction projects. Office rents are cheap in Holland; on average 10 pounds sterling per metre squared. Construction costs are inexpensive mainly due to the use of precast or insitu concrete.

California dreaming

Article Abstract:

US computer firm 3Com bought an American architect over to the UK to transform its 1970's UK offices into a California-styled development, similar to its headquarters in Silicon Valley, which were designed by Studio Architecture. The refit of the Hertfordshire industrial estate cost 14.9 million pounds sterling and has completely transformed the site into an American-styled building. Floor area has been increased from 10,400 square metres to 28,000 square metres, while the whole building has been fitted with air conditioning.
