UK consultants earn 6.7 billion pounds sterling a year: previously uncounted billions of pounds of fees come to light in first state-of-trade poll

Article Abstract:

A study, commissioned by the UK DOE and the Construction Industry Council, reveals that the 19,000 construction industry consultants earned total fees of 6.7 billion pounds sterling in 1995-96. The state-of-trade survey, based on 800 companies, shows that 1 billion pounds sterling was earned overseas and that the remaining fees were excluded from the industry's official 1996 output figures of 50 billion pounds sterling.

Where do you draw the line?

Article Abstract:

Many architectural practices with old-style values, are spending more time on a project than a fee will allow for. Further strains on a practice's resources is the explosion in architectural competitions, where a high level of presentation is expected. One practice had to restructure to survive, by dividing it into separate development, design and build divisions.
