USPS lowers year-end income to $600 million

Article Abstract:

The US Postal Service (USPS) has revised its net income figure for the fiscal year that ended September 11, 1998 from $800 million to $600 million. However, a spokesperson for USPS said the figure, which reflects the postponement of a rate increase that should have been implemented in June 1998, are not yet final and that, the audited financial results will be issued in December 1998. Grady Foster of USPS' budget and financial analysis department noted that the revised income still falls under USPS' initial income projection of $600 million to $800 million for fiscal 1998.

USPS' ABE System begins as scheduled

Article Abstract:

US Postal Service has unveiled the Automated Barcode Evaluator program on May 4, 1998, and the equipment proves to be running smoothly a week after the launch. USPS put 260 ABE machines at the larger business mail entry units and detached mail units throughout the US. To qualify for discounts, 70% of barcoded mail pieces must meet ABE requirements, and by July 1, 1998, requirements would be raised to 80%, and 90% by September 1, 1998. USPS expects 84% of barcoded mail would go through the ABE system.

Restrictions Don't Fly With Chicken Shippers

Article Abstract:

Mail-order hatcheries are expressing concern about new restrictions imposed by the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx Corp. limiting the delivery of newly-hatched chickens. The restrictions could severely impact companies like Murry McMurray, which mails 100,000 baby chicks a week. Previously, USPS used Emery Airlines, but FedEx won't ship live animals.
