USPS makes case for rate increase before the PRC

Article Abstract:

The US Postal Service continued with its appeal for a rate increase during public hearings conducted by the Postal Rate Commission (PRC) in Washington. The appeal for the increase, which direct marketers and magazine publishers hope will be reduced, is set to be presented by the agency by May 5, 2000. The PRC, which will begin hearing arguments from parties opposing the rate increase on May 22, 2000, is expected to make a decision by Nov 13, 2000.

PRC cuts USPS' rate increases

Article Abstract:

The Postal Rate Commission recently urged for a one-third reduction in the proposed $2.4 billion rate increase of the U.S. Postal Service, citing that the postal service miscalculated its need for an increase. The PRC, which also suggested that the increase not take effect until January 1999, is pushing to cut the rate to $1.7 billion to mark the benefits of lower-than-expected inflation since the request was filed in July 1998. Most direct mailers reportedly regarded PRC's recommendations as good news. Meanwhile, parcel shippers aired their satisfaction on PRC's acceptance of the USPS proposal to institute new worksharing discounts and deepen the current ones based specifically on new analyses of transportation costs.
