Watertight theory

Article Abstract:

Opposition to flat roofing remains strong in the UK. Only 10% of the total roofs in the UK are flat as compared to 50% in the US. Reasons are due to the difficulty in the laying and of identifying leak locations, especially with covered inverted roofs. Single-ply roofing can damage easily especially due to puncturing. Some experts such as Sandberg favour flat roofs as they are cheap, easy to lay and very waterproof. Since 1982 the incidence rate of single-ply roofing problems have decreased significantly. The provision of walkways on flat roofs can ensure non-membrane damage.

Foold rush in

Article Abstract:

A report criticising the usg of site investigation by British construction companies is welcomed by the industry. The Institution of Civil Engineers' report 'Inadequate Site Investigation' claims that site investigation is often done hurriedly without enough preliminary research work. It points out that poor site investigation can lead to delays or building failure if unexpected ground conditions are discovered during or after construction. Site investigation specialists claim they are forced to compromise quality in order to compete on price.

Ait fresheners

Article Abstract:

The Building Research Establishment and the Future Buildings Forum are investigating alternatives to mechanical air conditioning in deep plan buildings. Traditional Middle Eastern architectural features are being used as an example of effective passive cooling. Other methods being studies include thermal flues and using air cooled by being passed through pipes under the ground. Future buildings could incroporate materials that change state and absorb or release heat.
