Article Abstract:

The manufactured housing industry in California is making a strong comeback. After a five-year housing depression, the sector saw shipments increase by approximately 10% in 1996 and is predicting a similar growth in 1997. Another positive developments in the state were the delivery of the first two 16-ft.-wide homes to be shipped after state legislators agreed to allow transportation of these products. The development of two 20-unit manufactured housing pilot projects under the auspices of Local Partnership in Housing was another notable development in California.

Article Abstract:

A study conducted by the California Manufactured Housing Institute showed that the news media and local government officials have very little knowledge about the industry. Media people defined manufactured homes in various ways which include houses not constructed on site, large mobile homes, man-made and movable structures and cheap, low-end houses. Public officials also defined manufactured homes in different ways. These include houses constructed from low quality materials, houses with very little variation in design and houses which are fire hazards.

Article Abstract:

Shipments of prefabricated houses in California during the first eight months of 1998 rose by 40% compared to shipments in the same period in 1997. This is due to the improved economy of the state. Nevertheless, it is important for industry executives to remain vigilant in anticipation of the usual downtrends. Moreover, the California manufactured housing industry has not yet recovered the market share it once held during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
