What's in a name?

Article Abstract:

The creation of a single UK chartered institute, for all of the construction industry, would be a positive move and should lead to higher standards. The UK government have introduced a report which sets out to separate unqualified builders from those with accreditation. Members of the Chartered Institute of Building have failed in their attempt to change the name of the institute to the Chartered Institute of Constructors. They wanted to further distinguish good builders from those who performed substandard work. A more satisfactory system of accreditation for builders is operated in Japan.

Economic cleansing

Article Abstract:

Plans to issue Inland Revenue certificates of registration to all UK construction firms may place many in financial hardship, leading to business failure and unemployment, according to industry officials. The taxation changes will come into effect from early August 1999, when all construction firms will be required to register in order to obtain a Construction Industry Scheme certification, without which firms will not be able to operate legally.
