World wide wad

Article Abstract:

The building materials company Caradon uses the software package Hyperion Enterprise to update its monthly financial data. The company decided to purchase a World wide Web intranet to fulfill the requirements of travelling executives, who constantly needed updating on financial matters. The new system was introduced in 1994 and is used by all of the 76 subsidiary companies. The system has meant that financial reports can be prepared in a matter of minutes and time previously spent on checking figures has been reduced to a few days rather than weeks.

Oast modernism: turning a disused 19th-century hop store in Kent into a thee-bedroom home presented a fair number of challenges

Article Abstract:

Architectural practice, Caruso St John, designed a schme to convert a 19th-century barn in Kent into a three bedroom home. The exterior of the building did not require much work. A new window was the only alteration to the barn's openings, which created a link with the orchard outside. The structure was stabilised with beams fixed around the perimeter at first floor level.

Wired science

Article Abstract:

Flooring for new buildings often has to cope with a large volume of wiring for extra services. Structured cabling is now very common in offices equipped with latest information technology, being based on a standard grid of cable situated beneath the floor. Wiring of this kind does not necessarily require raised flooring or cable ducting.
