Article Abstract:

Construction professionals can earn up to 35-40% more in China than in the UK whilst in Hong Kong salaries are around 30-35% higher. Tax free salaries can be obtained through working in the Caribbean although wages are at the same levels as in the UK. Large contracting firms operating in Russia are also hiring professionals, such as engineers and project managers. Wages are around 20-25% more than paid in the UK and additional awards, such as four free flights, accommodation are also on offer. Changes to the UK tax laws may make overseas workers liable for tax.

Young UK building professionals are seeing pay rises of up to 16.5% in 1998, with Wales and the South-West reporting the highest increases. Average earning for a 32-year-old quality surveyor range from 20,000 pounds sterling to 38 pounds sterling. Building surveying directors can earn between 30,000 pounds sterling and 52,000 pounds sterling. Industry staff shortages have increased the trend of re-employing older staff who had previously taken retirement, while older executives are holding on to their jobs by taking smaller pay rises.

Article Abstract:

Quantity surveying professionals in the United Kingdom construction industry are earning 15% more than they were in 1996 due to an upturn in service requirements. Many quantity surveyor associates are currently earning over 30,000 pounds sterling. Typical salary ranges of quantity surveyors, building surveyors and architects are given. Quantity surveyors at all levels of experience tend to achieve higher salaries than accountants.
