A crash course in computers

Article Abstract:

A survey into computer reliability and helplines found that some sales assistants were too technical when talking to customers while others did not have adequate technical knowledge. However, most recommended an appropriate machine to meet the specified requirements. Free games or larger monitors were not offered. Customers felt confident about recommending Apple, Dan, Dell, Evesham Micros, Viglen and Gateway to their friends but would not recommend Packard Bell and Time products. The same people would not buy a computer again from Comet, Currys, Dixons or PC World.

Multimedia PCs: Faster computers are being launched all the time. We've look at 16 multimedia computers and tested a range of processors to find out how they affect a PC's speed

Article Abstract:

16 multimedia computers at the lower end of the ranges of well-known manufacturers were tested. Many models refer to the Intel Pentium processor, although there are alternatives, such as improved version from Intel, Cyrix and AMD. Several models featured interesting ergonomic features such as remote controls. Sound quality was disappointing overall, with the Elonex PC-5166 H/X MMX the only model having exceptional sound quality. The Dan, Gateway 2000 and Viglen all performed well, and the Olivetti also performed well.

Bits & PCs

Article Abstract:

A basic PC set-up, costing 800 pounds sterling, is adequate for most home applications, such as use of the Internet, CD-Roms, Microsoft Works, and Microsoft Money. A system featuring an Intel Pentium II 300 processor is recommended for those wishing to use Microsoft Office and other office applications, or the latest games. An overview and explanation of computer specifications is included.
