Balance your budget: We show you how to get a grip on your household finances by looking at the options for paying your regular bills

Article Abstract:

Household bills can be paid in various ways. Regular payments can be made by direct debit and some utility companies offer discounts for monthly payments. Fixed amounts can be paid by standing order and again, some utility companies may offer a discount. If the amount needs to be changed, the bank or building society will need to be informed each time. Continuous authority transactions are similar to direct debt, with money being billed to a credit card. One-off payments can be made by cash, cheque, credit and debit card, bank giro and through home banking.

Paying your legal expenses: Legal aid will soon be available in fewer civil cases. Should you buy legal expenses insurance, just in case?

Article Abstract:

The potential cost of a legal dispute if pursued through the courts can be a significant deterrent. The qualifying rules for legal aid have been tightened and are likely to be further tightened. Legal expenses insurance (LEI) will pay costs only if the insurer agrees there is a reasonable chance of success. The majority of LEI policies are sold as an add-o to contents or car insurance. After the event cover is more expensive.
