Crash test update: Small family cars

Article Abstract:

Six small family cars underwent the Euro NCAP crash tests which involve a frontal offset crash, a side impact, and assessment of potential serious injuries if hitting a pedestrian. The Ford Escort has been updated and now offers relatively good pedestrian protection, but pedestrian protection on the Ford Focus requires improvement. Protection for pedestrians on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class was poor, although good head protection was provided in the frontal impact. The Nissan Almera performed poorly, but the side-impact airbags in the Renault Megane provided good protection. The Vauxhall Astra performed well in the frontal impact, but pedestrian protection was poor.

Crash test update: executive cars

Article Abstract:

Executive cars performed well in crash tests, with the BMW 5-series, Saab 9-5 and Toyota Camry scoring a four-star rating. The others were close behind. The BMW protected the upper body of the driver and the airbags performed well. There are also two side airbags but these did not work as well as in other cars, such as the Toyota Camry. BMW did not score well on pedestrian protection. The Saab 9-5 gave the best protection to front occupants in both the front and side impact tests. The rear facing child seat protected a child from a frontal crash very well.
