A survey of user support services for home computers looked at computer manufacturer helplines. It found major differences between the companies, with Dan, Gateway 2000 and Viglen providing the best service. Users rated Packard Bell at just 8% for satisfaction with various aspects of helpline services. In many cases response times to phone calls were poor. Some specialist retailers such as PC World and Byte, provide helplines, as do the major software companies such as Microsoft.

Dan came out tops in a survey which questioned over 5,000 people on the quality of service provided by their computer supplier and the reliability of the product itself. Apple, Dell and Gateway also did well. Consumers were generally happy with their mail-order purchases, however, those who had purchased their computer at Dixons, PC World and Currys were not happy wth the service they had received.
