Fighting fire in the home (smoke alarms; includes related articles on case studies, purchasing guide, how a smoke alarm should be fitted, and methods of fighting fires) (Evaluation)

Article Abstract:

More than 60% of UK households had installed a smoke detector in 1992 according to the Home Office. Fires detected by smoke alarms accounted for just 13 deaths in 1992 against 595 deaths from other domestic fires. The occupants of houses fitted with smoke alarms have a two-three times better chance of survival. Information on 19 smoke alarms both battery and mains-electric powered, with details of vendors, specifications and prices is included.

Where there's smoke, there should be a smoke alarm

Article Abstract:

Smoke alarms are an inexpensive way homeowners can protect the lives of their loved ones, as well as their property investment. Some Australian local governments are making the installation of smoke detectors mandatory. An evaluation of smoke detectors is presented, with tabular information on the relative quality of specific products. Techniques for where and how to install smoke detectors is included.
