Veggie burgers: Tasters' verdicts from disgusting to delicious on 19 vegetarian burgers. Our experts analyse their nutritional content and give tips on balancing your diet if you are cutting out meat

Article Abstract:

The content of 19 vegetarian burgers were analysed and a taste test was undertaken. Meat-substitute burgers can be made from Quorn, soya or TVP and often look at taste like a meat burger. They have a similar protein content to beefburgers, although less fat and more fibre. Vegetable type burgers have more varied ingredients and have a lower protein content that beefburgers. Quorn Southern Style Burgers were the best meat substitute burgers, and Iceland Country Choice Vegetable Burgers, Safeway Vegetable Quarter Pounders and Tesco Potato, Leek & Chees Quarter Pounders were the best vegetable type burgers.

Advice on establishing a healthy vegetarian diet for an 11-year-old child is presented. A vegetarian diet incorporating dairy products can supply all the nutrients a child requires, but it is important to ensure that vegetarian children receive protein and iron from meat alternatives.
