Supermarket sweep: supermarkets are trying harder than ever to win your custom. But which chains are really delivering on price and service?

Article Abstract:

Supermarkets are continually expanding product ranges, offering price cuts and loyalty schemes. A survey of supermarkets considered prices of everyday items, service, and store environment. There were small differences between the stores for well-known brands and fresh produce, and researchers were mostly satisfied with the store they visited. A list of stores covered, and their overall rating is provided. Also covered are loyalty cards, home shopping services, and how to reduce shopping bills.

Checking out the supermarkets

Article Abstract:

Comparisons of nine supermarket chains, including Kiwk Save, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Safeway, revealed that similar prices were charged for a typical shopping basket. However, money savings could be made when buying a supermarket's own brands. Facilities, such as check-outs, car parking, opening hours and recycling, were found to be important in the choice of supermarket.
