Getting the edge on prices: it seems our supermarket price survey makes stores anxious to do well - to the extent that they alter prices when they think we're coming

Article Abstract:

The `Choice' magazine comparison of Australian supermarket prices in 139 stores in 24 cities was done with different products than those used in the 1996 to insure that no prices were arranged to distort the survey. Because the products were changed, comparative price analysis from prior years was not possible, but the survey reflected the most and least expensive supermarkets to shop. The Franklins chain had the cheapest prices at 11% lower than the overall average of all stores. The highest-priced chains were Coles, Woolworths and Jewel.

Doing well by doing good

Article Abstract:

Most mutual funds have at least some holdings in tobacco, military equipment, nuclear power or alcohol. Some investors may not wish their money to contribute to such industries. There are trusts, bonds and funds that limit their holdings to industries, businesses and organizations that meet certain ethical criteria. A sample list of such funds and their performance is included.
