Saskatchewan's uranium industry

Article Abstract:

Provincial taxation of the uranium mining industry in Saskatchewan is pretty good though benefits to residents could be improved, indicates Harry R. Campbell in a paper for the Economic Council of Canada. Taxation is found to slow production, but a slower rate of mineral extraction is better for local economies and the environment. Residents benefit from the tax in the form of reduced taxation and more government services. In the long run, residents may suffer from the benefits, in that the new prosperity could cause a population increase that would lower wages through more labor market competition.

Late payment

Article Abstract:

Late payment of commercial debts is a serious problem for many of the UK's small and medium-sized companies. The new Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, to be phased-in from November 1998, is designed to help companies improve cash flow by forcing late payers to pay interest. However, the act alone is unlikely to solve the late payments problem, say credit management experts.
