On a clear day

Article Abstract:

Binoculars should be tested for comfort before purchase, to ensure that they are easy to use and suitable for the individuals' inter-eye distance. The meaning of magnification, objective lens diameter, exit pupil diameter and field of view are described. Porro prism and roof prism binocular types are discussed and several models are reviewed by the Consumers' Association for contrast, brightness, alignment, field of view, exit pupil diameter, light transmission and overall picture quality.

Phoenix firms

Article Abstract:

Many companies in the United Kingdom have gone into either voluntary or enforced liquidation, only to be reinvented under a different name but using the same premises, equipment and staff. Consumers' investments are often lost to the first company, provided that it has been set up with limited liability through Company House. The Consumers' Association wants Company House to be more thorough with its investigation into director applications.

Corporate bond PEPs

Article Abstract:

British Corporate bond PEPs are more risky than building society investments, but less risky than share-based PEPs, and their recent introduction will encourage more people into this type of investment, either by direct purchase or through a unit trust. The consumer should consider the risks and expected returns when considering a purchase. Fund charges include initial one-off charge and an annual management charge.
