APEC quo vadis?

Article Abstract:

The direction of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), begun in 1989, could largely be determined at its Nov 1995 Osaka meeting, which will expand on themes expressed at its 1994 Jakarta meeting. The Osaka meeting could determine whether APEC will focus on trade liberalization and regional trading arrangements, effectively becoming a study forum, or continue to shift its focus towards domestic deregulation and trade facilitation, becoming a vehicle for economic integration issues. APEC appears to evolving as a group of independent nations with related trade, investment and development interests, rather than as a multilateral institution.

Window on the world: the latest 'Cabaret' is as dark and disturbing as life in the 30's... or 90's

Article Abstract:

Sam Mendes' production of 'Cabaret' proves that Broadway musical theater can be reinvented to yield new truths as readily as classic texts. The Manhattan theater it plays in has been remodeled as the play's Kit Kat Klub. Alan Cumming plays the role Joel Gray won an Oscar for in Bob Fosse's 1972 movie.
