The rise of e-mail

Article Abstract:

E-mail has seen major growth over the past few years and a survey shows that 81% of managers expect company investment in electronic business technology, including e-mail, to rise over the next two years. E-mail is a method of sending information from a PC, over the Internet, to another e-mail address. It is instant, less expensive than sending information by post and saves the expensive and waste of paper printing. An e-mail system requires application software, the Internet and a server.

File share or client/server

Article Abstract:

File sharing e-mail systems are mainly used by small businesses or departments, on local area networks. The cost will depend on the number of users connected to the LAN. A client/server system still uses store and forward technology but requires more intelligence from the server. Outlook Express is designed for the Macintosh platform and offers useful added-value functions. Eudora Pro has useful formatting features and allows several separate windows to be combined into one main pane.

E-mail problems

Article Abstract:

E-mail has many benefits, but also has drawbacks, as not everyone has access to it. E-mail addresses must be entered exactly or an error alert will show. Junk e-mail can also be a problem if they clog up the file server and prevent important e-mails from being delivered. It is also important to update anti-virus software regularly. Certain e-mail client programs offer the capability to 'mood stamp' messages.
