Article Abstract:

Consumer data on a range of household appliances revealed that appliances are generally becoming more reliable. Electronic items are particularly reliable, but the appliance with the worst record for reliability is the washer-drier. The data, covering 40,000 items in people's homes, also revealed the reliability of brands across a range of products. Dishwashers from Bosch and Neff, for example, are consistently reliable, but washing machines from Hotpoint and Hoover are consistently unreliable.

TVs that top the table

Article Abstract:

It is important when purchasing a portable television to consider how frequently and where it will be used. If it is to be the main television in the house, then it is best to choose a high quality model, while a cheaper model is perfectly adequate for occasional use. Features to consider include audio/video input, automatic tuning, child lock and Nicam stereo. Portable televisions are generally very reliable, although quality varies considerably between brands.

The big screen

Article Abstract:

The trend towards broadcasting in widescreen format is set to continue and widescreen TVs are becoming increasingly available. The main benefit of widescreen TV is that programmes can be watched in a 16:9 width-to-height ration, similar to that of motion pictures. However, it is difficult to watch standard broadcasts in a widescreen format and they continue to account for most TV broadcasting. Points to consider when purchasing widescreen TVs are presented.
