Whoever's in No. 10...: after election day, they could improve things for all consumers by taking these ideas on board

Article Abstract:

The issues that the Consumers' Association (CA) would like the government to take action on over the next few years are discussed. They include providing better information about energy effeciency, the clearer labelling of food, a review of how patients are represented in the NHS, and better protection against unscrupulous traders and dangerous products in the high street. A new system of regulation for communications technology is required and an independent accident investigation agency is needed to investigate accidents in all transport sectors. Education, the regulation of financial services and regulation of public utilities are also covered.

Taking a taxi

Article Abstract:

Service, safety and standards in taxis and minicabs orprivate-hire cars vary in the UK as local authorities are responsible for licensing policy. Booking is more reliable if done at least one hour ahead. Obtaining price quotes is worthwhile for long journeys. Return fares to airports are usually cheaper than private car or train for a family. Passenger would be safer with compulsory national licensing with basic minimum standards.Passenger rights are explained. A graph shows fares in the UK.
