FRANCE: PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING AND INNOVATION

Article Abstract:

Pushed by consolidation, pharmaceutical laboratories are increasingly pulling out of their packaging operations, which is going to subcontractors. Researches from major pharmaceutical laboratories are setting up their own companies for innovations in primary packaging and developing new packaging. These companies are supported by venture-capital investors. Standard suppliers increasingly favour direct contact with their companies, which enables them to invest in research and meet their client's quality demands in packaging. According to forecasts, world demand for pharmaceutical packaging is expected to continue to progress from now to 2001. This demand is expected to represent FFr 18.96bn for plastic bottles in 2001, up 5.2% from 1996; FFr 15.69mn for blister packs, up 6.1%, and FFr 36.38bn for other packaging, up 3%. Demand is expect to grow most in China for all packaging combined, with FFr 4.67bn in 2001, up 8.3% from 1996; followed by Japan with FFr 17.55bn, up 3.7%; the United States with FFr 21.03bn, up 3.7%; and Europe with FFr 19.3bn, up 3.6%.

FRANCE: MEDICATIONS AND PRIMARY PACKAGING

Article Abstract:

With the help of the control of social security expenditures, primary packaging or delivery systems for prescription drugs are increasingly favouring self-administration. Self-administration, comfort and security are the three priorities for those who design this type of system. These conditions are the best guarantee that a patient will follow the treatment. Patches and nasal spray, which replaces an injection are examples of self-administration. For comfort, there are new self-injection systems with an system which enables the needle to go in and then retract automatically, so that they patient doesn't see it. Innovations in terms of security especially concern the development of protective sleeves for needles and other retractable systems. The development of these systems is guided mainly by the fear of possible contamination by the AIDS or hepatitis virus.
