FRANCE: RECYCLING PACKAGING

Article Abstract:

According to the 1997 figures which ADEME supplied to the European Commission, France is well adapted to the European directive for recycling packaging. With all materials combined, the packaging used in France is 55% reprocessed and 40% recycled while the European directive recommends a minimum recycling rate of 15%. Paper and cardboard packaging leads with an 82% reprocessing rate and a recycling rate of 49%. Metal cans have a 50% reprocessing rate and a 49% recycling rate. Glass has a 42% recycling rate and wood has a 33% reprocessing rate and an 18% recycling rate. Only plastic packaging is lagging behind with a 40% reprocessing rate and only a 7% recycling rate, below the European recommendation. The means explored to improve the plastic packaging recycling rate include research and development efforts to increase the category of plastic which can be recycled, and extending the collection of plastic film and plastic supermarket bags.
