France: Sales of printing inks down 4% over six months

Article Abstract:

The French market of printing inks (EUR 381mn turnover with 110,000 tons produced) needs to revise its prices up and stop providing clients with services for free in order to avoid big problems, according to AFEI, the association of printing ink manufacturers in France. In addition to low return on investment rates (often under 10% and sometimes close to zero), the industry recorded a 4% decline in turnover during the first six months of 2001 while ink consumption by volume fell by 2-5% depending on market sectors. The decline in results is mainly due to the increase in services supplied to customers, higher raw material prices, and research and development spending, AFEI points out.

FRANCE: ADHESIVE LABEL MARKET

Article Abstract:

In 1999, France consumed more than 450mn metres squared of adhesive labels, compared to 3bn m[superscript two] in Europe and 10bn m[superscript two] worldwide. The French market is shared between some 300-320 manufacturers, with prices ranging from FFr 5 for one thousand basic blank labels, to FFr 2,000 per thousand laminated labels. Even the largest manufacturer on the market does not produce more than 5% of the total market volume, and only a dozen produce more than 5mn m[superscript two] of labels, including Avery Dennison, Luck, Techmey, Agipa, Seec, Bopack France and Soprano.
