Alternating contractional and extensional events in the Alpujarride nappes of the Alboran Domain (Betics, Gibraltar Arc)

Article Abstract:

The Apujarride complex of the Alboran Crustal Domain of the Gibraltar Arc in Southeastern Spain exhibited a history of alternating contractional and extensional events. The geological activity led to the installation of large mantle and deeper crustal pieces in progressively higher levels along the orogenic belt. Furthermore, reactivation of crustal tectonics induced the intracrustal emplacement of ultramafic slabs into structurally high positions during late-nappe stacking.

Mode of extensional tectonics in the southeastern Betics (SE Spain): implications for the tectonic evolution of the peri-Alboran orogenic system

Article Abstract:

The Alboran domain is a hanging-wall block or pre-Miocene nappe stack in the southeastern Betics of Spain. Analysis of metamorphic and structural data of the Alboran domain indicated that the hanging-wall block is a site of Miocene extension instead of a Miocene nappe emplacement. The Alboran domain also exhibited two orthogonal extensional systems which were formed by the gravitational collapse of an overthickened crust.
