Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that turbidites from the Ouachita Mountains came from Appalachian sources is problematic since the Nd isotopic data used to support this theory provide no indications of provenance location or sediment-dispersal vector. Moreover, the characterization of provenance yielded by the data needs to be clarified. The transportation of sediment westward from the Appalachians across the Black Warrior basin is not supported by previous sedimentologic-stratigraphic analyses. The isotopic data only support the presence of Grenville rocks in the southern source.

Article Abstract:

Dorn and Krinsley's analysis of leaching from porous textures is debatable. Their findings of postdepositional disturbances may be interpreted as constructional features. Varnish cracks may be unnatural manifestations. The results from the electron probe do not consider particle size, pore volumes, and bulk densities. The movement and deposition of particles and ions into the pores was also neglected. They made unsubstantiated assumptions in their deionized water experiment. Finally, varnish formation cannot be dated from organic mixtures.

Article Abstract:

A. Watchman's points, namely the permeability of rock varnish to capillary water, the existence of postdepositional textures, and the ability of capillary water to carry particles and ions, are all valid. However, his interpretation of the identified porous textures as constructional features is less defensible. The micrographs presented suggest that the textures do represent leached material sources.
