Comment on "New evidence of magmatic diapirs in the intermediate crust under the Dead Sea, Israel" by Nitzan Rabinowitz, Jean Steinberg, and Yossi Mart

Article Abstract:

The series of magnetic diapirs identified as underlying the western side of the Dead Sea basin and mainly aligned along the north-south direction must either be model artifacts or the result of the misinterpretation of known salt diapirs. They cannot be lower crustal magmatic diapirs. The magnetic low in the southern Dead Sea basin is not consistent with the possibility of a buried dense body, and no corroborating data has been presented to support the existence of hot diapirs.

New evidence of magmatic diapirs in the intermediate crust under the Dead Sea, Israel

Article Abstract:

A tomographic analysis of the seismic events in the Dead Sea region indicates the presence of large magmatic diapirs. The magmatic diapirs extend as 10 to 13 km high domal structures that are elliptical in shape. The domal structures stretch from the lower crust to the overlying intermediate crust. The presence of the magmatic diapirs under the Dead Sea basin indicates abnormally high temperature, magmatic upwelling, and metastable stratification in the lower crust.

Transpressional shearing and strike-slip partitioning in the Late Cretaceous Sierra Nevada magmatic arc, California

Article Abstract:

Evidence of dextral transpression during the youngest magmatism in the Sierra Nevada magmatic arc is presented. The Rosy Finch shear zone (RFSZ) shear zone was found to be active at quite shallow crustal depths. The development of the RFSZ may be associated with a change in the angle of plate convergence of the Farallon plate from obliquely sinistral to obliquely dextral.
