Earth observing satellite launch on target
Article Abstract:
NASA will launch its Earth Observing Satellite (EOS) spacecraft, EOS AM-1, in June 1998. The spacecraft is the first in a series for NASA's Mission to Planet Earth project, which aims to investigate the effect of natural and man-made changes on the global environment. EOS AM-1 will be using five instruments to examine the earth's continents, oceans and atmosphere and study interaction of water vapor, aerosol, particles, trace gases, terrestrial and oceanic properties and their influence on atmospheric radiation and climate.

Project to Intercompare Regional Climate Simulations, Workshop II, 5-6 June 1997
Article Abstract:
A workshop was held by the Project to Intercompare Regional Climate Simulations (PIRCS) on Jun 5-6, 1997 with the aim of advancing the status of regional climate simulation using atmospheric mesoscale models. The theme of the workshop is the evaluation of the feasibility of using mesoscale methods for climate simulation. Several topics were discussed in the workshop such as the strengths and weaknesses of the PIRCS boundary conditions, technical problems faced in performing the simulation and observational data needs.

NASA spacecraft reenters atmosphere
Article Abstract:
NASA's earth-orbiting Lewis spacecraft was forced to reenter the earth's atmosphere and be incinerated after failing to establish contact with the space center. The 890-lb spacecraft, which was part of NASA's Small Spacecraft Technology Initiative program, was built by TRW Space and Electronics Group and launched on Aug 22, 1997 on board a Lockheed Martin Launch Vehicle. An unchecked spinning rate caused the failure of the solar arrays on Lewis to produce power thereby causing the batteries to be discharged.
