NOAA-K weather satellite successfully launched

Article Abstract:

The US Dept of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Atmospheric and Space Administration have debuted a satellite that will reportedly enhance weather forecasting while monitoring global environmental events. The satellite, which will operate for 12 years, will scan and transmit meteorological information around the world. It is supported by search and rescue instruments that can be utilized to locate ships and aircraft in emergency situations.

Comments on "regional real-time numerical weather prediction: current status and future potential."

Article Abstract:

University-based real-time numerical weather predictions for different regions have been augmented by the Local Analysis and Prediction System (LAPS). This system is a project of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Forecast Systems Laboratory. It aims to hasten the gathering, assimilation and analyses of local data. The system also allows real-time transmission of verified weather forecasts to local operational forecast facilities.

NOAA's latest bird, GOES-10, is stable

Article Abstract:

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) GOES-10 weather satellite was declared safe and stable after a successful third attitude adjustment in Jun 19, 1997. The GOES-10 experienced problems with the system controlling the satellite solar array after it was launched on Apr 25, 1997. An investigation on the cause for the solar array drive problem is continuously being conducted by a NASA, NOAA and Space System/Loral team.
